By that new group, Queen?
Many years ago, when Wayne’s World first came out, you might remember there was a scene in that movie that revitalized the Queen classic, “Bohemian Rhapsody“. I don’t remember exactly where we were living then (Minot, maybe?) but I clearly remember that one night a young man called the radio station and asked the DJ to play, “The song Bohemian Rhapsody, by that new group, Queen?” At which point the DJ not only mocked the poor kid for not knowing it was a remake, that Queen was no longer a group, and that in fact, their lead singer was deceased ….. but he recorded the call and played it over and over and over.
I remember giggling.
And shaking my head and wondering who on earth could be that clueless.
And then giggling some more.
Well, it appears the apple did not fall far from ……… our house.
Brayden and I had the following conversation a few days ago:
Brayden: “Hey, mom, do you like that new song, “We Are the World”?”
Me: “You mean the original, or the remake?”
Brayden: “The new song, the one they wrote to help the people in Haiti.”
Me: “Well, they actually wrote it to help people in Africa, like twenty years ago. This version is a remake.”
Brayden: “No its not. Its got all new singers.”
Me: “Well, yes, new singers to RE-sing the song. But it was written by Michael Jackson a long time ago, and sung by people who were popular back then.”
Brayden: “No, Michael Jackson never finished it. That’s why they had to bring these people in, to finish it and record it.”
Me: “Brayden, I’m telling you, its not new.”
Brayden: “Yes, it is. Mom, Justin Bieber is not even twenty years old …. clearly, it is NEW.”
Me: Shakes head.
So I guess me blogging about her misunderstanding this, is the technological equivalent of the DJ, recording that call for posterity’s sake. And you all have my permission to shake your heads and giggle. Because Lord knows I did.

:hanging my head in shame: A few years back when Brett Michaels was a judge on Nashville Star, he performed “Every Rose Has it’s Thorn”. My then fiance walked into the room and started singing the song- which knowing he hates country music it amazed me that he knew the words. When I asked how he knew this song he was astonished that I didn’t know who Brett Michaels was LOL. I mean, I had hear of Poison, but I didn’t know the band members or what songs they sung. Go ahead, have a giggle at my expense- my now husband still gets a good laugh about it every now and then!

LOL This is exactly what YouTube is for! I hope all 3 of your kids will be watching the original with MJ. :)

Ah, kids. Doesn’t that make you feel old? I was @ Best Buy one time looking @ car stereos when Journey came on; I made a comment about them, and the kid helping me said that his MOM liked Journey, too – not the best thing to say when you want to make a sale…
Maybe you should go out on YouTube to find the video of the original & show it to Brayden – or maybe it’s more fun to laugh at her…

A few years ago I was watching an old “Dukes of Hazzard” rerun with the pre-teen kids of some friends. When the name Daisy Duke was mentioned in the show, they cracked up, unable to believe that this character was named after those shorts. I wanted to cry when I had to explain that this was where the term ‘Daisy Duke’ came from, not the other way around….

I think she needs to watch the old version on You Tube. For the record, I HATE the new version. What’s really said is I’m a radio DJ, and I have no idea who a lot of the artists are, but, then again, I’m a country DJ. So I know who Kanye is.

That’s great! I love when stuff like that happens. Makes me feel smart to know something about music that my kids don’t. ;) It always cracks me up when a song comes on and I know it and they are surprised by that. Then I get to tell them it’s ancient and was around when I was a kid. :)

My 11 y.o. daughter was watching Wizards of Waverly Place today, and Selena Gomez sang the song “Magic” at the end. She did not want to believe that Selena was not the first to sing the song, and that the song is actually 30+ years old!

Or like Will asking me if the song “ABC” was sung by Michael Jackson when he was white or when he was brown. Kinda like Fat Elvis and Skinny Elvis.

Fat elvis or skinny elvis- that cracks me up.
I love reading that other kids do the same thing-
Shaking my head laughing … and wondering if I should check with my kids tonight to see if they know about the original song!
