Priorities

**Naturally**, when the bad weather blew through here this evening, with high winds and thunderstorm warnings and the tornado sirens eventually going off, I was not at home.  In fact, the two oldest were here by themselves.  Not only was I *not* at home, but I was in a location that didn’t have cell service, so I couldn’t even call to check on them.  Nothing like the parental guilt that comes with leaving your children alone, and left to their own devices during a potential tornado.**    Thankfully, my mother was able to at least call them and give them directions.  She relayed to me the conversation she had with Kellen as things started looking bad outside:

Grandma Betty:  “Kellen, I want you to get a flashlight and the phone and get down in the storm shelter.”

Kellen:  “Should I get bottled water?”

Grandma Betty:  “I don’t think you’ll be down there that long, but if you want to, that’s fine.”

Kellen:  “Should I take food?”

Grandma Betty:  “Again, you won’t be down there very long, but if you want to take a snack while you wait, that’s fine.  I’ll call you when its ok for you to come back up.”

Kellen:  “Should I get the dogs?”

Grandma Betty:  “Yes, if you can get the dogs and even the cat down there with you, that would be good.”

Kellen:  “Should I get Brayden?”

Hmmmmm.  His sister was FOURTH on the list, behind the phone, dogs, and the fruit snacks???   Good to know where his priorities are.

**For the record, it was TOTALLY not my fault.  Details to follow.

This happened to me last summer..I don’t live in a place that generally sees tornados, but we happened to have threat of one last summer while my children were home and I was in the hairdressers…I was OUT OF MY MIND. We don’t have storm shelters here, so I was on the phone with my oldest son giving him crazy directions…it was the longest 1/2 hour of my life…I could not get home in time and felt totally trapped…what a terrible feeling. Glad all worked out ok for your family

I’d much rather go through the occassional earthquake in California than even think about experiencing a tornado.

You shouldn’t make me laugh like that — I’m in a cube now at work. What will my co-workers think? But that sounded just like something that would happen at our house.

Waiting to hear the details? Did something happen?

Is it inappropriate that his forgetting his sister made me laugh???
