The good news ….

18 November 2009 | Computers,Technology

The good news is, the contractors actually showed up today.

The good news is, they seem to know what they are doing.

The good news is, I can see the progress they are making.

The good news is, when they asked where the breaker box was located, because they needed to turn off the power to the upstairs, I knew where it was.

The good news is, when I noticed a few minutes later that every digital clock in the entire house was now blinking, it didn’t bother me.

Then I noticed the computer had turned off.

And none of the digital cable boxes for the televisions are working anymore.

The good news is, my kids aren’t allowed to watch TV Monday through Thursday, so it didn’t really matter.

What is DISTURBING, however, is that before I realized all the cable was out, I tried to re-boot my computer.

And received notice that there was a system fail, and the operating system disk would need to be reinstalled.

Now, I know I’m not anykind of computer wizard, but that sounds a little ominous to me.  “System fail” …. isn’t that sort of a big deal?

The good news is my laptop is working in the meantime.

The good news is that the cable company is coming out tomorrow afternoon and hopefully both the televisions and my desktop will be repaired without any issue.

The really good news is that I’ve accepted my status in life as a technological shit-magnet.  Just accepted it.  No longer fighting it.  Every time I touch my computer, something goes wonky.  Most of the time, things go wonky and I didn’t even do anything.  I’m just sitting there, innocently minding my own business, and BLAM!  My utility driver goes out!  BLAM!  A software program fails.  BLAM!  Monkeys fly out of my computer’s butt.  And pretty much every time I try to fix a problem, I make it worse.

So the good news is, after going through it so many times, it really doesn’t stress me out near as much as it used to.  Instead of freaking out about potentially losing my files and data and e-mails and photos, I just took a deep breath, and crossed my fingers that the tech tomorrow can fix it.

And said a quick prayer of thankfulness that I remembered to hook up my external hard-drive last week.

Huh. Why am I not surprised? I suppose after following you for .. um.. 4 years (omw.. really? can I just get a LIFE here?), I’m almost as used to it as you are. Anyway… I hope all will be fine. Meanwhile, I’m over here trying to figure out a) how it is that your post about hanging vs. folding sweaters got your highest comment count in a while.. ???? and
    b) why it is that I can now not get a mental image of flying monkeys streaming out of the bottom end of a hard drive out of my head.
    Thanks, and good luck!
